Richard Mathes Death – A 70-year-old Grandview Heights man was found dead on Interstate 670 East near the Grandview exit Wednesday morning. The victim has been identified as Richard Mathes. According to reports, Richard Mathes of Grandview Heights died by suicide after jumping from a bridge overpass to the interstate below.

How did the incident happen?

Authorities indicated that Mathes’ demise occurred after an alleged attempted murder targeting a woman at a residence situated in the 1000 block of Grandview Avenue in Grandview Heights, shortly before his suicide.

Responding to a distress call just past 7 a.m., law enforcement officers from Grandview Heights and Columbus arrived at the scene where a man was observed climbing the railing on a bridge overpass along I-670 East. Tragically, upon the officers’ arrival, Mathes leaped from the overpass.

Coinciding with this event, a woman entered the Grandview Heights Police Department with multiple stab wounds around the same time. Immediate medical attention was provided to her by station medics, following which she was transported to the Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center in stable condition, with an expectation of recovery.

Authorities investigating

Authorities chose not to disclose the identity of the woman involved. Grandview Heights police detectives meticulously conducted investigations at both the Grandview Avenue residence and along I-670. The incident on I-670 East led to the closure of the interstate for nearly three hours, causing significant traffic disruptions in Columbus and western Franklin County. Normal traffic flow resumed around 10:15 a.m. following the highway’s reopening.
