Detectives with the Homicide Unit of the Knoxville Police Department are continuing their investigation into the events that led up to the fatal gunshot and wreck that took place late on Sunday night at the intersection of Walker Springs Road and N. Gallaher View Road. Both incidents occurred in the same location. On the evening of Sunday, June 11, 2023, at around 9 o’clock, officers from the Kingston Police Department responded to the intersection of Walker Springs and N. Gallaher View, where a wrecked orange Dodge Charger was discovered off of the roadway.

There were two people who had been shot inside the vehicle. The driver, identified as Avila Anfernee, 27, of Knoxville, was pronounced dead at the site, and the female passenger, aged 16, was rushed to the UT Medical Center with numerous gunshot wounds. The driver has been named as Avila Anfernee. She is still being treated in the hospital for serious injuries that pose a threat to her life. There was a child in the back seat of the car who was four years old. The youngster did not sustain any injuries as a result of the gunshot or the ensuing crash, but ballistics data collected at the site suggests that the child came dangerously close to being struck by gunfire.

It is believed, based on the investigation that has been carried out thus far, that the Charger was waiting in a turn lane at the intersection that was indicated above when an unidentified individual left a car and fired numerous shots into the automobile from close range. After that, the Charger took off but eventually ended up in a ditch. The first pieces of evidence that were collected at the scene suggested that the suspect vehicle was a red sports car. Nevertheless, the validity of that description has not yet been confirmed by the detectives. At this time, information regarding the suspect or the suspicious car is not available.

Detectives believe that a case of mistaken identity was the cause of the shooting, despite the fact that the inquiry is still in its early stages and a motive has not yet been identified.
At this point, the investigation into the shooting is still active and being carried out in its entirety. Calling East Tennessee Valley Crime Stoppers at 865-215-7165 is encouraged for anyone who may have information that could help with the investigation that is currently being conducted.
