Murder Suicide Glouster Ohio; Two found dead on Jan. 15

UPDATE: According to the Athens County Sheriff’s Office, a man and a woman were found dead in Athens County on Monday afternoon following what appears to be a murder-suicide. At approximately two o’clock in the afternoon, deputies were dispatched to a residence in Glouster, as stated by the Athens County Sheriff’s Office. A check of the residence was conducted by deputies and detectives upon arrival, and they discovered two bodies in a bedroom located on the upper floor.

Amy Smathers, who is 54 years old, and Jack Smathers, who is 59 years old, were recognized as the two persons. Following their investigation of the scene, the detectives came to the conclusion that the married couple was in the process of filing for divorce and that there was a high probability that a domestic violence event had taken place.

According to the sheriff’s office, the evidence suggests that Jack died of what appears to be a suicide by means of an overdose of drugs. At this point, Amy’s injuries remain unknown; nonetheless, her death is being investigated as a homicide, and her husband is the only person suspected of being responsible for her passing.

No other person was determined to have been involved in the incident, according to the findings of the detectives. Until the autopsy and toxicology results are completed, the investigation is still ongoing.
