Miguel Cortez Death – A Del Oro High School student and Del Oro wrestlers community member passed away unexpectedly. Miguel Cortez died from an apparent suicide following a long battle with depression and mental anxieties. The cheerful teenager and intelligent athlete was pronounced dead after taking own life. The Loomis community residents has specially requested for prayers for Miguel family as they heal from the tragedy.

According to information on the Del Oro Wrestling Families, a candlelight will be held for Miguel on Monday evening at 7:00 pm. All student and coaches that wish to attend are welcomed. As many of you have probably heard, our community has suffered a horrible loss. On Friday we lost one of the members of our wrestling community when Miguel Cortez passed away. I know we will all miss Miguel’s smile and infectious laugh.

According to Clint Madden, Miguel was a 3-year member of the team and was loved by the entire wrestling team and Del Oro Community and his loss is having a profound impact on all of us. I know our community is strong and many have expressed their desire to help Miguel’s family however possible. At this time, I am not aware of any needs the family may have but will reach out to our wrestling families as soon as we know more. We will be diligent and pass on information as we find out more.

One of my primary concerns is the well-being of all of our team members and friends of Miguel following this tragedy. Please take a moment to talk to your family members about what happened. We will be taking time in practice tomorrow and touch base with all the wrestlers in attendance. As a team, we will be there to support his family, especially Miguel’s sister, who is a member of our girls wrestling team.

There will be Counsellors, Mental Health specialists and associates, as well as Chaplains available for students and staff starting on Monday. Students coming together and supporting each other is one of the best ways for us to cope with this type of tragedy.
