Lyle Helke White Bear Lake MN, Retired Cross Country and Track Coach has died

Lyle Helke Death – Retired White Bear Lake Area High School Cross Country and Track Coach Lyle Helke has sadly passed away. He died leaving family, friends and his student in shock and disbelief. He was confirmed dead through a publication made on Facebook on Friday 4th August 2023 that reads “My favorite coach, Lyle Helke, passed on Sunday. He had been an educator for 30 years and coached cross country and track and field in White Bear Lake”. The cause of his death has not been released at this time.

Lyle Helke Career

During Helke’s 33 years as head coach, the Bears girls cross country team has finished in the top three in their conference 32 times, won 14 conference titles and 17 section titles, qualified for the state meet 24 times and placed in the top 10 10 times, and won one state title. Helke, who had goals of being a nationally ranked runner throughout his time in high school and college, started his career as a health education teacher at Mariner High School.

During his time in high school and college, Helke competed in running competitions. In 1983, he quit teaching to take a job at the District Center, where he coordinated a program to make schools safer and less conducive to drug use. Coach Helke was regarded not only in the area of sports, but also for the great mentorship and guidance he has provided.

Who was Lyle Helke?

Not only does he teach running strategies and techniques, but he also encourages general life skills that are applicable in a variety of contexts outside of the track. He emphasizes the need of developing resilience, time management, and discipline to his athletes, all of which are skills that will serve them well in their personal and professional life. The capacity to inspire and motivate others is one of the most impressive qualities that Coach Helke possesses.

Coach Helke maintains a remarkable level of modesty, in spite of the many honors and successes he has received. He makes sure that every member of the team knows how valuable their contributions are and how important they are to the overall success of the group. Athletes can approach him with their concerns in a straightforward manner.
