Leimert Park Shooting Today: Reports of shots fired at MLK day celebration in Los Angeles, California

Leimert Park Shooting Today – Law enforcement agencies and emergency crews are responding to a shooting in Los Angeles, California on Monday, January 15, 2024. The Los Angeles Police Department says that officers were sent to the Leimert Park Village, a neighborhood in the South Los Angeles after reports of shots being fired as people were celebrating the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. LAPD Officers seen forming skirmish line at the scene, according to witnesses. At the time this report was made, it was not clear if the shooting hurt or killed anyone. People are asked to stay away from the area while authorities look into what happened.

Martin Luther King Jr. Day

The 39th Kingdom Day Parade, volunteer activities, a fair in Leimert Park, and a Mass at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels will all be held in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. The three-mile procession started on Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, just west of Arlington Avenue, went west to Crenshaw Boulevard, then south to Vernon Avenue, and ended close to the Leimert Park Station stop on the K Line. The subject matter is “Can’t Stop, Won’t Stop, Going to the Promised Land.”

Los Angeles County Supervisor Holly Mitchell, who represents the Second District, which contains the parade route, will serve as the grand marshal. Along with Mayor Karen Bass and U.S. Senate candidate Rep. Barbara Lee, D-Oakland, two of Mitchell’s fellow supervisors, board Chair Lindsey P. Horvath and Hilda Solis, are set to march in the parade.

The honorary grand marshal will be Princess Tiana from Disney. Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, and over 200 Disney employees will be participating in a parade at Disneyland. Rosa Parks was a passenger on a General Motors “old look” bus in Montgomery, Alabama in 1955 when she refused to give up her seat to a white passenger, which led to the Montgomery bus boycott. Metro will be represented in the parade with a reproduction of that bus.
