Lafourche Parish pedestrian accident
Based on the findings of the preliminary inquiry, it was determined that Helm was operating a Craftsman riding lawn mower while attempting to cross LA Hwy 1 from the northbound shoulder. On the same highway at the same time, a 2023 GMC 3500 headed northbound on LA Hwy 1. As Helm made his way across the road, he put himself directly in the path of the GMC. The driver of the GMC used the brakes and turned to the right in an effort to avoid a collision, but the lawn mower got stuck in the vehicle’s path.
Helm sustained life-ending injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident. The driver of the GMC and their two passengers were all safely strapped and did not sustain any injuries as a result of the accident. Even though impairment is not thought to have been a contributing factor in this accident, a routine toxicological sample was taken from Helm and sent in for processing.
The individual operating the GMC voluntarily subjected himself to a breath test, which revealed that there was no trace of alcohol present. The cause of this crash has not yet been determined. When attempting to cross a roadway, you should always take the time to thoroughly check in both directions for oncoming traffic and wait until there is a significant break in the flow of traffic before proceeding. It is essential to move quickly while maintaining a cautious attitude in order to avoid any potential risk.
