Following a tragic collision involving two vehicles on California Avenue on Thursday night, a man is now under police custody. The incident resulted in the loss of one individual’s life and left another in critical condition. Police officers were dispatched to the intersection of California and Chester Avenues after receiving reports of the two-vehicle crash.
Based on their preliminary investigation, it was determined that a sedan was heading northbound on Chester Avenue while a pickup was travelling westbound on California Avenue. These two vehicles collided at the intersection. Upon arriving at the scene, law enforcement and emergency responders discovered that the driver and passenger of the sedan had sustained severe injuries.
Both the male and female occupants were transported to a medical facility for medical care. Unfortunately, the passenger’s injuries proved fatal, leading to their passing. The female driver of the sedan remains in critical condition with injuries considered life-threatening, as confirmed by the Bakersfield Police Department (BPD).
The male driver of the pickup, who was at the wheel during the incident, emerged without injuries and remained at the scene. However, he was subsequently taken to Kern Medical for further medical assessment, according to the police statement. Subsequent investigations by the BPD determined that the pickup’s driver, identified as Luis Esquivel, 48, a resident of Bakersfield, was operating the vehicle under the influence of alcohol.
As a result, Esquivel was apprehended and faced charges including DUI, murder, driving with a suspended license, and traffic violations. His court appearance is scheduled for August 22.
