Kelly Doran Death – Twin Cities real estate developer Kelly Doran has tragically passed away. He was competitive, and he would negotiate with the best of them. Kelly Doran was announced dead early Thursday morning. He died after battling with cancer. Kelly Doran was 66 years old at the time of his passing.

Doran had three children: Evan, Kramer, and Sydney. Doran married his wife, Connie, in 2013, and they blended their families. Thoughts and prayers are with his friends, family, and community during this difficult time.

Who was Kelly Doran?

Kelly Doran, a respected and prolific developer known for building extensive retail spaces and housing in the metro area, passed away at the age of 66. Over the past decade, he became one of the busiest multifamily developers in the Twin Cities. Doran, born in Duluth, started his career at Robert Muir Co.

in 1991, contributing to the development of projects such as the Tamarack Village shopping center in Woodbury. In 2007, Doran founded Doran Cos., a company that handled development, construction, and property management.

Career

He played a key role in kickstarting the student housing development around the University of Minnesota campus. Despite a brief foray into politics, Doran’s focus remained on real estate, and he amassed a portfolio of market-rate apartments, leaving a significant impact on the metro area.

Doran battled lung cancer in 2016 but was initially declared cancer-free after surgery. Facing a different strain of cancer later on, he encountered insurance challenges with Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Minnesota, leading to a switch to HealthPartners for employee coverage.

In January 2023, Doran received a terminal cancer diagnosis, leading him to stop chemotherapy and enter hospice care in mid-December. Despite selling a majority stake in Doran Cos. in 2019, Doran, in collaboration with his son, Evan Doran, started a new venture called the Doran Group in 2021.

The company, now with over 160 employees, acquired a building in Eden Prairie in late 2022 to relocate its headquarters from Bloomington. Kelly Doran’s legacy extends beyond his real estate achievements, as he was known for his commitment to fairness, keeping his word, and his hands-on approach as a boss.
