He was confirmed dead through a Facebook post made on Monday 14th August 2023 that reads “Devastated to hear that Judge John Carroll—Marine, law school dean, and compassionate friend, and passionate advocate for justice for all—has passed away. Semper fi, Judge”. The circumstances surrounding the actual cause of John Carroll’s death has not been revealed.

Following this, he entered the military, courageously serving as a Marine Flight Officer during the Vietnam War, completing over 200 combat missions. In 1974, Carroll attained his magna cum laude distinction upon graduating from Cumberland Law School. His involvement extended to key roles such as a member of the Cumberland Law Review, a participant on the national moot court team, and the esteemed position of student bar president.
His pursuit of legal scholarship was further enriched by his master of laws from Harvard University. Subsequent to his academic achievements, Carroll embraced a dynamic career path. He assumed the mantle of Legal Director at the Southern Poverty Law Center in Montgomery, Alabama, right after graduation.

Moreover, he exercised his legal prowess in both civil and criminal domains for a decade. His expertise was also imparted during his tenure as a law faculty member at Mercer University’s Walter F. George School of Law, which lasted for two years. John Carroll held the deanship of Cumberland School of Law in Homewood, Alabama, spanning from 2001 to 2013. Before assuming the role of dean, Carroll dedicated 14 years to his service as the chief U.S. magistrate judge for the Middle District of Alabama. His legal acumen also led Chief Justice William Rehnquist to appoint him to the Judicial Conference’s Advisory Committee on Civil Rules.
