Gilbert Martinez Death – Former judge on the 4th District Court in Colorado Gilbert Anthony Martinez has sadly passed away. He was confirmed dead in a social media publication on Wednesday, November 1st, 2023, that read “My compadre, the honorable Gilbert Martinez passed last night. A close friend and one of the most decent humans you could ever meet has left us. I knew him from our law school days at CU and our brief careers as legal service attorneys.”
Who was Gilbert Martinez?
Born in Trinidad and raised in the Denver region, Judge Gilbert Anthony Martinez was a native of Colorado. After being assigned to the Fourth Judicial District District of the District Court in 1989, he was successfully re-elected to six-year terms in 1992, 1998, 2004, 2010, and 2016. Judge Martinez earned a J.D. from the University of Colorado Law School in 1977, following his initial degree in civil engineering from the University of Colorado.
Judge Martinez oversaw the Colorado Springs Public Defenders Office prior to his 1989 bench appointment. He oversaw the Colorado Springs Public Defender’s Office for four years during this period. Judge Martinez presided over the District as Chief Judge twice, from 1994 to 2007 and again from 2011 to 2016.

Judge Martinez had a strong dedication to doing community service and took part in a variety of voluntary endeavors, including presiding over Teen Court and the high school mock trial programs. He often gives speeches at career days and activities for elementary and high school students. The majority of Judge Martinez’s cases involve domestic relations. In his capacity as Chief Judge, he oversaw the probation division and handled trial court administration tasks.
He also helps with the statewide training program for incoming judges. Martinez had the perfect temperament for that job and did what was right regardless of the repercussions he personally might face. He was a people person who dearly loved his family. He was the consummate professional who did not forget where he came from. He was a loving husband to his wife Joanie.
