John Milam Early Life and Career
A long agricultural lineage that began in West Texas in the 1800s provides the setting for John Milam’s story. As a young man, John spent much of his time in Billings and the northeastern part of Montana helping out with an Angus/Ranch Horse operation. While spending summers on his uncle’s ranch north of Dalhart, TX, he gained experience in agriculture by helping to manage flood-irrigated wheat and alfalfa fields and by backgrounding commercial steers.
Although John was admitted into the veterinary medicine program at Colorado State University, he changed his major to civil engineering so that he could get his degree faster and take care of his growing family. He returned to El Dorado, Arkansas, his birthplace, for his first job after joining a petroleum engineering firm in Denver, Colorado, after finishing college.
In the end, John established a very prosperous construction company in El Dorado, but this was just the beginning of his ventures into property and construction. John joined Team Penning in the early 1990s and loved competing in USTPA events with a small group of talented horsemen. At the same time, he started buying up property and commercial cattle, starting with two Angus bulls from Camp Cooley Ranch for his initial herd. His journey would be greatly impacted by the bond he formed with Craig Green at this sale.
