Before the accident that took place at approximately 06:00 BST on August 25, 2019, they had been driving towards a car rally that was being held in Shrewsbury. During an inquest, it was revealed that Mr. Lilwall had been experiencing flashbacks of the day before, when he had been in the area responding to the unexpected death of a newborn. When the ambulance ran over the white line and crashed into the 1931 Ford, the paramedic who had worked for West Midlands Ambulance Service (WMAS) for the previous 28 years was behind the wheel.
Six seconds before the incident, the dashcam footage from the ambulance showed that it was moving in a direction that was perpendicular to Mr. Allen’s car. According to testimony given during the inquest that took place in Hereford, Mr. Lilwall had worked more than 25 hours in the previous 36 hours.
On August 15th, as he drove the ambulance, they got closer and closer to the town where the baby had been found dead. “I had a weird, weird feeling,” Mr. Lillwall testified during the inquest. “I got really cold, like a shiver, like somebody has walked over your grave, like a fear,” she said. “It felt like somebody had walked over your grave.” After then, he claimed to have seen the baby’s face, which he described as being “absolutely awful.”
“At that moment, there was a loud bang, the impact. I am unable to recall anything that occurred beyond that point. At the inquest, he stated that the accident was “the worst thing that has ever happened to me.” He was referring to the crash.
