A woman from Butler was found to have died at the site of an accident on Tuesday evening after she was involved in a head-on collision with a semi-truck just east of Kendallville. According to the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Department, Chantel Wells, 30, was driving east in the 5500 block of U.S. 6 soon after 6:30 p.m. when she allegedly drove into the path of an oncoming semi. Wells was pronounced dead at the scene. As a result of the collision, the vehicle driven by Wells wound up in a ditch, and she was ejected from the vehicle as a direct consequence of the accident. Following the incident, the semi slid into the ditch in a jackknifed position and came to rest there.
It was found that Wells was no longer alive when they arrived at the site. Stacy Hagerty, who was 57 years old at the time of the accident, was driving the semi when it was involved in the collision, and she was taken to the hospital for treatment of some minor injuries. An investigation into what caused the collision is currently being carried out by the Dekalb County Sheriff’s Department.
