Who was Greg Gaffney?
Gregory P. Gaffney was the devoted son of Phillip M. and Kathleen M. Gaffney as well as the beloved father of Matthew J. and Mia N. Gaffney. He was the devoted brother of Megan E., Philip J., Kathleen M., and the late Matthew D. Gaffney. Gregory was a devoted Catholic who sincerely lived his religion. Because of the way he brought up his kids, they are now on the right track to getting all the sacraments that are appropriate for a practicing Catholic.
In 2001, Greg received a scholarship offer from Mississippi State University to play Division 1 college football in the Southeastern Conference (SEC). Gregory proudly served his country in the American Army. Gregory served in Iraq from 2008 to 2009 in support of OPERATION IRAQI FREEDOM. Following that, 1LT Gregory Gaffney oversaw a platoon of soldiers as they assisted in counterterrorism operations in and around Baghdad, Iraq.
About Greg Gaffney
He received numerous honors for his bravery, leadership, and commitment to his team and objective, including the BRONZE STAR and the U.S. Army Combat Action Badge. In 2011, Gregory started working for the Delaware State Police. Gregory joined the Special Operations Response Team (SORT) in 2014 and received his certification as a SORT operator with the primary job of an Assaulter. Gregory finished his sniper training in 2016 and worked as an assaulter, an observer, and a sniper in the years before his tragic death.
Gregory received a promotion to the North Squad Assistant Team Leader post for SORT in 2022. A prison riot that turned into a hostage rescue with numerous barricaded subjects, a murdered State Trooper that resulted in a barricaded subject, a hostage rescue that resulted in the successful recovery of a young girl, and countless other high-risk tactical operations are just a few of the dangerous and violent tragedies for which SORT has been called into service.
Gregory continually worked to become a better person and support his teammates. Gregory argued for the inclusion of Team prayer as part of routine pre-operational preparation since he was aware of the risks he and his SORT teammates frequently faced. Greg’s dedication to everyone and his unwavering allegiance to them will be remembered for his love of family and friends.
