Early Life
Gil was born in 1951 and spent his childhood in San Rafael, which is located in the state of California. He was a part of the freak collectives Family Dog and Sons of Champlin, and he was present throughout the beginning of the hippie movement and acid rock.
He had the impression that the musical environment in San Francisco was disintegrating, so in 1969 he uprooted his life and moved first to Amsterdam and then to India, eventually settling in Goa. Here is when he came upon the roaming holy men known as sadhus. These guys lived off the forest, covered themselves in ash, and drank what they called the “elixir of the gods.” Soon after, Gil himself attained the status of Sadhu, taking the name Baba Mangalanand and joining the Juna Akhara as a disciple of Mahant Nirmalanand Saraswati, the order’s Guru.
