A female was discovered dead inside a single-vehicle accident that occurred around 4:15 p.m. on Monday, according to Bartholomew County Sheriff officers conducting the investigation. According to Sgt. Dane Duke, spokesman for the Bartholomew County Sheriff Department, a caller reported seeing smoke in the area, prompting deputies to react to the accident around 4:15 p.m. in the 13000 block of South County Road 100W.

According to Duke, when the caller investigated the smoke, they discovered a burning car. It looked like the car struck a tree close to the road. According to Duke, when the deputies got there, they couldn’t see inside the car or get close enough to get inside. Despite using three fire extinguishers, the responding deputies were unable to extinguish the fire.

After arriving on the site, the fire was put out by the Wayne Township Fire Department and the Southwest Volunteer Fire Department. Inside the car, one person was discovered dead. In order to carry out an ongoing investigation, the Accident Reconstruction Team was dispatched to the scene. Erica Greathouse was a native of Columbus, Indiana, and a graduate of Columbus North High School class of 1998. She became a Registered Nurse after studying at Ivy Tech Community College Columbus, and Western Governors University. She worked as a Kidney Care Advocate at Fresenius Kidney Care from 2017 to 2020 and she worked as a Treatment Options Specialist at Fresenius Medical Care.

She has been a Clinical Manager at Adaptive Homecare, LLC since 2020 in Columbus, Indiana, and was recently employed as a nurse service provider at Elite Hydration Health & Wellness. Erica has worked in the medical field since high school and worked her way from CNA to BSN. Erica has been in long-term care, dialysis, education, and home care.

Erica loved helping people and had experience with some amazing nurses growing up and always knew it was her calling. She was a wife of 22 years to her husband Craig. The couple is blessed with two beautiful daughters, Michaela a senior in college, and Kerigan a sophomore in college. She loved spending time with her family and friends and recently learned about IV therapy and its benefits.
