Eric Montross Cancer Update: NC Basketball Star died at age 52, UNC Basketball mourns

Eric Montross Death – Eric Montross, a former big man for North Carolina and the NBA, passed away on Sunday at the age of 52, according to an announcement made by his family on Monday. Montross had begun treatment for cancer in March.

His family expressed their gratitude in a statement that was sent through the University of North Carolina. “His family is grateful for the tremendous support and the truly overwhelming love expressed by so many people as he battled with his signature determination and grace,” the statement said.

From 1990 to 1994, Montross was a member of the University of North Carolina Tar Heels, where he was coached by the Hall of Fame Dean Smith. During that time, he was the starting center during the Tar Heels’ championship run in 1993. During that season, he was selected to the first team of all-ACC players, and he was an Associated Press second-team All-American on two separate occasions.

While participating in the 1994 NBA draft, Montross was picked by the Boston Celtics as the ninth overall pick. Over the course of his eight-year career in the National Basketball Association, he was a member of the Dallas Mavericks, the New Jersey Nets, the Philadelphia 76ers, the Detroit Pistons, and the Toronto Raptors.

Since the end of his playing career, he had worked for the Rams Club, which is the fundraising arm of the University of North Carolina’s athletic department, and had also been a radio analyst for the broadcast of UNC games for a total of eighteen seasons.
