Derek Durante Cranston RI North Cumberland Middle School Teacher Has Died

Derek Durante Death – The North Cumberland Middle School community is mourning the demise of their beloved teacher Derek Durante who passed away unexpectedly. The Cranston, Rhode Island resident died yesterday following a brief illness. Derek Durante was originally from Hanson, Massachusetts. He had been with the North Cumberland Middle School over the years. Derek was a well-known Alumnus of Northeastern University and Cambridge College. “I will miss your encouraging words, Mr. Derek. RIP, you were loved by every one of us.”

The exact cause of Derek Durante’s death was not immediately disclosed by his family. At the time of this publication, the North Cumberland Middle School has not released an official statement following the sad incident. The town of Cumberland can be found in the far north-eastern part of Rhode Island. The Cumberland School District is comprised of a total of eight individual schools. All of the elementary schools in the area, which include Ashton, B.F. Norton, Community, Garvin Memorial, and J.J.M. Cumberland Hill, provide full-day kindergarten for their students.

The Cumberland Preschool Center may be found in the Ashton Elementary building. Joseph L. McCourt Middle School and North Cumberland Middle School are two of the city of Cumberland’s middle schools. There is only one high school in Cumberland. As of October 2018, the overall enrolment of Cumberland Schools has not changed much from its previous level of roughly 4,685 kids.

The school system is overseen by a seven-person School Committee, which is comprised of a Chairperson, Vice-chairperson, and Clerk. Members of the School Committee are elected to serve on the committee for two years. The School Committee is responsible for hiring a Superintendent of Schools who will be responsible for the management and leadership of learning throughout the district. Mr. Robert Condon, Dr. Robert McGinnis, Mr. Rodney McFarlin, Dr. Robert Patterson, Mr. Robert Wallace (1993–1996), Mr. Joseph Nasif (1996–2005), Dr. Donna Morelle (2005–2011), Dr. Phil Thornton (2011–2015), Mr. Robert Mitchell (2015–2021), and Dr. Phil Thornton (present) have all held the position of Cumberland Superintendent of Schools at some point in time.
