Swimmers Obituary: Promega Corporation Packaging Engineer and Michigan State University student found dead after drowning accident at Wisconsin River Thursday

Jerome Schreiner Death – The body of the two swimmers found dead following a drowning accident in Lake Wisconsin on Thursday has been identified. 24-year-old Akash Selvam and 25-year-old Jerome Schreiner died in the drowning incident that happened on Thursday, August 3, 2023, at the Wisconsin River in Columbia County.

Jerome Schreiner was a Packaging Engineer II at the Promega Corporation “Life Sciences” in Menomonie, Wisconsin, and a graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Stout. The Madison, WI man was a son, brother, and above all a teammate.

The second victim was located by the responding law enforcement agencies with the help of locals on the scene. According to reports, Akash Selvam was a student at Michigan State University and was a resident of East Lasing, Michigan.

The Story: Authorities say the body of the two swimmers who went missing on Thursday afternoon in the Wisconsin River has been located. Authorities in Columbia County recovered a second body from the river on Friday. Hours after authorities were called to the river to investigate reports of two missing swimmers, ages 24 and 25, the first body was recovered by a diving team on Thursday night. The Sheriff’s Department announced on Friday that the two bodies were indeed those of the missing swimmers.

The second body was located early Friday thanks to the efforts of the dive team and a remotely operated vehicle. The two men were located in water that was roughly 17 feet deep just north of where the river empties into Lake Wisconsin. By the time authorities got to the scene on Thursday, boaters in the vicinity had already begun searching for the men after receiving the original report at 3:48 p.m.

Adults were reportedly hanging out on a sandbar when one of the males in the group got swept away. Others in the group tried to help the man, but they, too, were eventually overtaken. According to the Sheriff’s Office, criminal intent is not being considered. Until the men’s families have been informed, we cannot release their identities. The Portage Fire Department and Aspirus EMS also responded to the scene, and the Sheriff’s Office Dive Team was sent out right away.
