Five hours after the account was created, McCarthy’s publisher verified that the account was a hoax and that McCarthy did not own a computer. They also established that McCarthy did not have access to the internet. In 2018, a second account called @CormacMcCrthy was created with the intention of imitating McCarthy. In 2021, it was certified verified for a short period of time after a tweet that went viral; however, his representative afterwards acknowledged that the account was once again a fake.

In 2016, a fake surfaced on Twitter saying that McCarthy had passed away; the information was even repeated by USA Today. In response to the urban legend, the Los Angeles Times published an article with the headline “Cormac McCarthy isn’t dead. He is invincible and cannot perish. On June 13, 2023, McCarthy passed away at the age of 89 in the comfort of his home in Santa Fe.
