Who is Cierra Abellera?
Cierra Abellera is a former McNair Scholar who is now pursuing a PhD degree at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. Her research interests include the ways in which intergroup contact influences the processes of belonging among members of majority and minority groups, with a specific emphasis on immigrants and members of host societies. She graduated from the University of Massachusetts Amherst with a M.S. degree in Social Psychology. She and a B.S. in Psychological Science.
Working with non-profit organizations, university centers, and international collaborators, Cierra has been conducting research within the Intergroup Relations & Social Justice Lab, which is directed by Dr. Linda R. Tropp. The purpose of this research is to investigate how contact influences perceptions of inclusion and feelings of belonging across a variety of contexts and groups that have varying societal statuses.
The Society for the Psychological project of Social Issues presented Cierra with the 2022 Applied Social Issues Internship Award for her research project on refugees’ views of race and racism in the United States. This award was obtained by Cierra with the most recent accomplishment.
