Christopher Dougherty Death: Philadelphia’s WPVI-TV Chopper 6 Aerial Reporter and Photojournalist Chris Dougherty has been identified as one of the victims who passed away in a deadly helicopter crash at Wharton State Forest on Wednesday night. According to law enforcement agencies, 67-year-old Monroe Smith of Glenside, PA, and 45-year-old Christopher Dougherty of Oreland, PA., died in the incident.
The 6th WPVI ChopperAccording to investigators, the Philadelphia TV went down in a section of Wharton State Forest in Washington Township, Burlington County, on Tuesday night while returning from an assignment near the Jersey Shore. Near 8 p.m., according to the TV station, the accident happened. A helicopter was reported missing just before 11 p.m. on Wednesday, according to the New Jersey State Park Police.
The team boarded the helicopter at Northeast Philadelphia Airport just before 7:30 p.m. and headed to a mission close to Galloway Township, which is just outside of Atlantic City and not far from the Jersey Shore. According to flight tracking data, the chopper was last seen flying over Wharton State Forest before descending to return to Philadelphia.
On Wednesday, a cruiser belonging to a state trooper sat idle close to the wooded region, where the pavement gives way to gravel and where signs warned that motor vehicles couldn’t go. The location is a piece of the New Jersey Pinelands, a wilderness area of over seven counties and one million acres that is home to thick forests, rivers, and uncommon flora. According to WPVI-TV, the helicopter is rented from the North Carolina-based company U.S. Helicopters Inc.
