Cheryl Steffen Death – University of Northern Iowa Custodian Cheryl Steffen of Jesup, Iowa has sadly passed away. She died on Wednesday 18th October 2023 at the age of 64  surrounded by her beloved family. She was pronounced dead at Unity Point Health – Allen Hospital emergency room in Waterloo, IA.  The circumstances surrounding the actual cause of Cheryl Steffen’s death has not been revealed at the time this report was made.

Cheryl Steffen Education and Career

Cheryl, the daughter of Ernest Peter Hemmer and Thelma Esther (Harrington) Hemmer, was born on July 29, 1959, in Waterloo, IA. After completing her education at Jesup High School as part of the class of 1977, she pursued further studies at Hawkeye Community College. Her marriage to Michael Francis Steffen took place in Gilbertville on May 31, 2014. To those who knew her, Cheryl was more than just a colleague; she was a source of love and care, playing vital roles as a devoted wife, mother, sister, grandmother, and friend.

Being a devout member of St. Francis Barclay Catholic Church in rural Dunkerton, Cheryl found solace and community in her faith. Her professional commitment led her to a position as a custodian at the University of Northern Iowa.

Cheryl is survived by her husband, Michael of Dunkerton; one son, Nicholas Schmitz and fiancé| Miguel Rodriguez of San Diego, CA; two daughters, Elizabeth Nordin of Dunkerton, Kathryn Schmitz (Becks Jordan) of Queen Creek, AZ; one step-daughter, Lauren (Aaron) Aguilar of Westgate, IA; two step-sons, Eddie (Katelyn) Steffen of Richmond Hill, GA, Sam Steffen of Waterloo; 6 grandchildren, Steven and Axl Aguilar, Mavrick & McKenna Steffen, Avery and Felicity Nordin; also, 3 brothers, Larry (Florence) Hemmer of Indianapolis, IN, Jack (Nikki) Hemmer of Jesup, Steve (Blane) Hemmer of Minneapolis, MN. Cheryl was preceded in death by her parents; one son, Joshua Michael Schmitz; 2 brothers, Tom and Bob Hemmer; and one sister, Janice Youngblut.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. – Monday, October 23, 2023, at St. Athanasius Catholic Church, Jesup, IA. Visitation will be from 3:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m., Sunday, October 22nd at the White Funeral Home, Jesup, IA. A parish rosary will begin at 3:00 p.m., Sunday. Visitation will also continue for an hour before services Monday at the church.
