A wrong-way driver caused a head-on collision on Ponte Vedra Boulevard (A1A) north of Guana River Road on Thursday morning, which resulted in the deaths of two males from Jacksonville aged 29, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

The accident report states that the two males were travelling southbound on A1A in a car when, for reasons that are unclear, they crossed the double yellow line into oncoming traffic and collided head-on with a pick-up truck. The driver of that truck, a 57-year-old man from St. Augustine, was taken to the hospital with some minor injuries.

The force of the head-on collision caused the automobile to spin out of control, and it was then struck on the right side by an SUV that was following the truck while it was travelling south on A1A. Serious injuries were sustained by the St. Augustine woman, age 28, who was driving the SUV when the accident occurred.

Both the car’s driver and passenger were pronounced dead at the scene of the accident. According to the investigation, every single person was wearing their seat belt during the incident.
