Bryan Collins Death – Bryan Collins, a resident of Long Island, New York, and the football defensive coordinator at Stony Brook University has sadly passed away. Who was Bryan Collins?
In January 2023, Bryan Collins was promoted to the position of defensive coordinator for the Seawolves. As he enters his third season on Coach Priore’s staff, Collins is responsible for overseeing all aspects of the team’s defense. Prior to his current role, he served as the Seawolves’ defensive line coach for the first two seasons after joining the program in 2021.
Before his time at Stony Brook, Collins had an illustrious coaching career at LIU Post, where he served as the head coach for 23 seasons. During his tenure, he became the winningest coach in the program’s history, accumulating 162 victories. Under his guidance, LIU Post made six NCAA tournament appearances and secured eight Northeast 10 Conference championships. Collins was recognized as the Northeast 10 Coach of the Year on seven occasions, earning the honor in 1999, 2000, 2002, 2005, 2014, 2016, and 2018. His leadership resulted in 16 winning seasons and three undefeated campaigns in 2002, 2016, and 2018.
In addition to his head coaching duties, Collins served as the Director of Athletics for LIU Post from 2006 to 2017. During this time, he played a pivotal role in transforming the department into one of the most respected and accomplished in Division II. Collins also led the football program through a merger with LIU Brooklyn and its subsequent elevation to the Division I level in 2019. In 2021, he was named one of the finalists for the Eddie Robinson Award after guiding LIU to its first two wins as an FCS program.
About Bryan Collins
Collins’ coaching career began in 1991 at LIU Post, where he initially served as an assistant defensive coach and defensive line coach until 1993. He then moved on to the United States Merchant Marine Academy, where he worked as the defensive coordinator and linebackers coach from 1994 to 1996. In 1996 and 1997, Collins returned to LIU Post as the defensive coordinator and linebackers coach before assuming the role of head coach in 1998.
Before his coaching career, Collins was a student-athlete at St. John’s University, where he played linebacker for the Red Storm’s football team. He was honored with the Dr. Peter Vitulli Award, which recognizes the student-athlete who best exemplifies courage, perseverance, dedication, and the spirit of self-sacrifice in pursuit of the highest ideals of sportsmanship. Collins earned his bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from St. John’s University in 1987.
