Brendan Sexton Death – On Tuesday 14th November 2023, former NYC Sanitation Commissioner Brendan Sexton sadly passed away. He died at the age of 78 surrounded by his beloved family who will forever miss him. He was confirmed dead through a Facebook post that says “It is with deep sadness that the Dalzell-Sexton family announces the death of our patriarch, Brendan John Sexton”. The circumstances surrounding the actual cause of Brendan Sexton’s death has not been disclosed. He was born on June 29, 1945 in Detroit, Michigan.

Having completed his education at Forest Hills High School in Queens, he pursued a bachelor’s degree in experimental psychology at NYU, graduating with high honors (summa cum laude) in 1969. Later in his career, he returned to NYU as a Clinical Professor at the Wagner Graduate School of Public Service. His commitment to the well-being of fellow New Yorkers began to take shape in 1966 during his undergraduate years at NYU. Alongside his late former wife, Lynn Ossa, and lifelong friend, the late Jan Stacy, he founded Encounter, Inc., an innovative treatment program for young drug abusers in Greenwich Village.

Over a span of more than 25 years, Brendan accumulated extensive experience in both government and corporate sectors, serving under five different mayors of New York City. His involvement started with an appointment to the Mayor’s Management Advisory Board, also known as the Shinn Commission, in 1976.

Subsequently, he held the position of Director in the Department of Investigations (DOI). His dedication and competence led to his selection to oversee the Mayor’s Office of Operations, initially as Deputy Director from 1981 to 1983, and later as Director from 1983 to 1986. Predeceased by his parents, Brendan Sexton and Hilda Zack Rogin, and his stepparents Patricia Cayo-Sexton, PhD and Lawrence M. Rogin, and longtime friend and former partner Constance Zalk.

Survived by his wife Karen Dalzell, sister Patricia Hersh, children, Amber Sexton, Tara Shelby Sexton M.D., Brendan Sexton III, David Zalk, Oona Dalzell-Sexton and Zoë Dalzell-Sexton, step children, Eben Sexton, Lisa Abitbol, Ilona Abitbol, and Carinna Abitbol as well as his Grandchild, Ajali Z Harrison and step-grandchildren, Kai Abitbol-Pierce, Masai Marchan and Téa Padro.
