Barbara Mumaugh Career

She later moved to Colorado and eventually found herself settling in Carefree, working diligently as a real estate agent until 1999. In 2001, Barb made a life-changing decision and purchased a scenic rural plot of land near Rocky Point from a government ejido. Little did she know that this decision would pave the way for her extraordinary mission. At the outset, Barb’s primary focus was on canines. It started with just a handful of dogs, but her passion and dedication grew with each passing day. Determined to provide the best care possible, Barb immersed herself in learning essential skills.

She taught herself how to deliver puppies, treat distemper, and even set broken bones. Although she preferred leaving surgical procedures to trusted local veterinarians, she became a true expert in nearly all aspects of canine care. Over time, Barb’s home gradually transformed into a sanctuary for dogs in need. Presently, her compassionate efforts have resulted in the employment of a dedicated team of twelve individuals.

Who was Barbara Mumaugh?

Even before the establishment of HALO, Barb managed to find loving homes for approximately 700 dogs. These fortunate adoptions were made possible through the support of tourists who discovered her refuge through word of mouth. Retirees on vacation would frequently visit, spending time socializing with the dogs and generously donating dog food. Recognizing the significance of Barb’s cause, dedicated volunteers set up the Barb’s Dog Rescue Facebook page, maintained the website, and formed a board to raise funds for the shelter.

As a testament to the integrity of her efforts, Barb’s Dog Rescue was registered as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. Barb’s story was an inspiring testament to the power of one individual’s unwavering commitment to animal welfare. Through her selfless dedication and the collaborative support of her community, she has transformed her property into a haven for countless dogs in need.
