A fatal accident occurred as a result of a motorbike pursuit in Buncombe County. On the morning of Sunday, May 14, at approximately 12:28 a.m., members of the North Carolina State Highway Patrol (NCHSP) observed a motorcycle driving in the westbound direction of Interstate 26 in Buncombe County at the 33 mile marker. The motorcycle was moving at approximately 90 miles per hour.
According to the NCSHP, a pursuit then took place after a trooper made an attempt to “overtake” the motorcycle. After continuing on I-240 east, the pursuit moved onto US-19 north, which will eventually become I-26. As the driver of the motorcycle approached the New Stock Road Exit, he started to lose control of the vehicle. The motorcyclist went off the road to the left and ended up stranded under the bridge.
The driver was thrown from the vehicle and came to rest in the median after being ejected. At precisely 12:32 in the morning, the state trooper called the Newton Communications Center to report the collision. It was determined that the driver had already passed away at the scene.
