The bodies of two canoers from Southern Minnesota who had been missing for almost three weeks have been found by authorities in northwest Wisconsin. On the evening of October 28, the search for two men from New Ulm was underway. About fifty miles south of Superior, on the Minong Flowage, the canoe they were using was discovered to be capsized.

According to a news release from the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office, search and rescue personnel found Andrew T. DeRock’s body on Wednesday afternoon. DeRock is 27 years old. The body of Ryan J. Busch, age 26, was found on November 8. According to the preliminary inquiry, the canoe capsized for reasons unrelated to weather or drinking. During the course of the 18-day search, officials had to negotiate challenges like the local weather, chilly water, and natural vegetation.

Search operations, according to Douglas County Sheriff Matt Izzard, started as soon as the overturned canoe was discovered and have been ongoing ever since. The search and recovery effort involved search and rescue teams from Wisconsin and Minnesota as well as a private search organization.

Andrew DeRock’s obituary and funeral arrangements will be released by the family at a later date.
