What happened to Alexander Hawkins?
The Fulton County Sheriff’s Office stated in a release that Alexander Hawkins was discovered unresponsive in a medical unit cell at the main Fulton County Jail just before 7:30 a.m. on Thursday. The attempt to revive him was made by the medical staff. He was the sixth individual to pass away while being held in prison by Fulton County in 2018. After his arrest on July 31, Hawkins was initially taken into custody and held at the Atlanta City Detention Center.
The following day, an appearance in municipal court resulted in a call for his case to be transferred to the Fulton County Superior Court. After that, on August 5 he was taken into custody and placed into the Fulton County Jail. He was being jailed on a charge of shoplifting with a bond of $5,000 at the time. The authorities have stated that the office of the county medical examiner will conduct an autopsy to identify the cause of death as well as the way in which it occurred.
The United States Department of Justice has begun an inquiry into the circumstances of the jail, noting the death of Lashawn Thompson in September 2022 as one of dozens of deaths that have occurred in the facility over the course of the preceding few years. Thompson, who was 35 years old, passed away in the bedbug-infested cell located in the mental part of the facility.
Earlier this month, the county came to an agreement with Thompson’s family over the lawsuit. Condolences are been sent to the family members and friends of Alexander Hawkins who passed away while in Fulton County Jail.
Alexander Hawkins obituary and funeral arrangements will be released by family members
